  18. Overview
  19.  
  20. The Public-Access Computer Systems Forum (PACS-L) is a
  21. computer conference that deals with all computer systems that
  22. libraries make available to their patrons.  Utilizing PACS-L,
  23. users discuss topics such as CD-ROM databases, expert systems,
  24. hypertext programs, microcomputer labs, locally-mounted databases,
  25. network-based information resources, and OPAC's.
  26.  
  27. The conference does not deal with staff-oriented functions in
  28. integrated library systems (e.g., acquisitions, cataloging,
  29. circulation, and serials control), staff-oriented microcomputer
  30. use (e.g., spreadsheets and word processing), or mediated online
  31. searching.
  32.  
  33. While many users are librarians, PACS-L also serves computer
  34. specialists, faculty members, and others.  The conference was
  35. founded in June 1989 by Charles W. Bailey, Jr.  Currently,
  36. there are over 5,330 users in 50 countries.  The conference is
  37. moderated by Dana Rooks and Jill Hackenberg.  The Information
  38. Technology Division of the University of Houston provides
  39. technical support for the conference.

  41. Messages sent to PACS-L are reviewed by the conference
  42. moderators, who distribute messages on appropriate topics to
  43. conference participants.  Normally, PACS-L users receive
  44. 5-15 messages per day.  Please do not send messages longer than
  45. about 250 lines; break long messages up into multiple shorter
  46. messages.
  47.  
  48. The University of Houston Libraries provides PACS-L as
  49. a public service.  It does not verify the accuracy of submitted
  50. messages nor does it endorse the opinions expressed by message
  51. authors.  Authors of PACS-L messages are solely responsible
  52. for content of their messages.

  54. All messages to the conference are automatically archived.
  55. Users can search the message database for specific information
  56. using complex Boolean queries.  The most reliable method
  57. of searching the database is to submit batch search jobs
  58. to the list server via e-mail messages.  Search features include
  59. nested Boolean expressions, search limitation by date and time,
  60. and SOUNDEX searches.

  62. An electronic journal, The Public-Access Computer Systems
  63. Review, was established in September 1989.  The first issue was
  64. published in January 1990.  The journal became refereed
  65. in November 1991.  Articles are stored as individual files
  66. on the list server, and an annotated table of contents
  67. for each issue is sent out as an e-mail message to all
  68. PACS-L users.  After looking over the table of contents,
  69. users can retrieve article files of interest.  Libraries are
  70. authorized to add the journal to their collections at no
  71. cost.  The journal is cataloged on OCLC and RLIN.  For further

  75. An electronic newsletter, Public-Access Computer Systems News, is
  76. also distributed on PACS-L.  The first issue was published in
  77. March 1990.  Issues are sent out as messages on PACS-L.
  78. Back issues are stored on the list server.  Libraries
  79. are authorized to add the newsletter to their collections at
  80. no cost.  The newsletter is cataloged on OCLC and RLIN.

  84. The Library Technology Watch Program at the University of
  85. California, Berkeley distributes its electronic newsletter,
  86. Current Cites, on PACS-L.

  88. A second list, PACS-P, was established in January 1991 for users
  89. that want to receive PACS-L publications, but do not want to
  90. receive messages from PACS-L users.  PACS-P serves over 820 users
  91. in 38 countries.

  95. To join PACS-L, send the following e-mail message to
  96. LISTSERV@UHUPVM1: SUBSCRIBE PACS-L First Name Last Name.
  97. (The UH list server also has an Internet address:

  100. To receive the PACS-L publications only (no messages from PACS-L
  101. users), send the following message to LISTSERV@UHUPVM1:
  102. SUBSCRIBE PACS-P First Name Last Name.  Do NOT subscribe to both
  103. PACS-L and PACS-P; PACS-L users receive all publications as part
  104. of their subscription.

  106. To sign off PACS-L, send the following e-mail message to
  107. LISTSERV@UHUPVM1: UNSUBSCRIBE PACS-L.
  108.  
  109. To stop PACS-L mail when you go on vacation, send the following
  110. e-mail message to LISTSERV@UHUPVM1: SET PACS-L NOMAIL.

  112. To resume PACS-L mail delivery, send the following e-mail
  113. message to LISTSERV@UHUPVM1: SET PACS-L MAIL.

  115. To determine what your PACS-L distribution settings are,
  116. send the following message to LISTSERV@UHUPVM1: QUERY PACS-L.
  117. This is a useful command to try if you stop receiving PACS-L
  118. mail.  The moderators may have had to set you to NOMAIL because
  119. of problems with your e-mail account.

  121. To send a message to the PACS-L, send your e-mail message to
  122. PACS-L@UHUPVM1.

  124. To obtain a list of PACS-L users, send the following e-mail
  125. message to LISTSERV@UHUPVM1: REVIEW PACS-L F=MAIL.

  139. add "F=MAIL" after the GET command.  For example, to retrieve
