- This sounds like another case of "a librarian is every bit as much a
- professional as a doctor or lawyer." Let's put aside for the moment the
- proposition of a kind of bar exam for librarians. While I don't see a need
- as such, it would be feasable to implement. Who would pay for such
- certification, who would administer the test, and what constitutes an agreed
- body of testable knowledge for entry level professionals are all questions
- that could be hashed out.
-
- I find it inconceivable, however, that you can come up with some system for
- "re-certifying" library professionals. What would such a test look like?
- Would music librarians be given the same test as reference librarians from a
- public library? or an acquisitions librarian? or a systems librarian? or a
- special librarian? (Well, you get my point...). Will SLA certify special
- librarians and MLA certify music librarians? Would such a test accentuate
- current working knowledge or current library "theory"? And how would it
- "require" people to stay current? Are you proposing such a test include
- knowledge that working professionals would otherwise not need, but would
- study for re-certification?
-
- And finally, recertification would weed out people who aren't committed to
- the profession the way a loyalty oath weeds out people who aren't committed
- to the current regime. Most people would pay lip service to what a great
- idea that librarians have to re-certify is, while doing the absolute
- minimum to get through the thing. Besides, most libraries are crammed full
- of people who aren't committed to libraries, but act that way to get in on
- the great pay, the glamor, the adoration of friends and relatives ...:-)
