- TKM>Subject: Macs and IBM's on Novell Network
-
- TKM>I am interested in connecting maybe 5 Macintoshes and 5 IBMs to a Novell 48
- TKM>server. Is this possible, and if so, how would I go about doing it?
-
- Just purchase NetWare for Macintosh and install it. I
- assume since you said a "Novell 486 server" that you your server is up
- and operating? Connecting the IBMs would already have been done since
- that is the basic configuration of supporting DOS machines.
- You will need some network interface cards for the Macs or use a
- DL2000 card in the server and connect the Macs via LocalTalk. The
- DL2000 LocalTalk will work but won't give you the performance like
- ethernet will. If file sizes are less than about 200K, this will
- suffice. When you are handling larger files, the users get a little
- antsy waiting and you should go with something like ethernet.
- If you are sharing a Postscript printer and want Novell to handle the
- print queue chores, then get the DL2000 to service the PS printer if you
- don't have some gateway from your MS-DOS topology to LocalTalk.
