- Warning to those of you using Maynard MaynStream software!
- We were using MaynStream version 3.1 engineering release 0.45.
-
- We found out the hard way that our MaynStream software was not
- backing up all of our NetWare v. 3.11 files. It was getting
- about 99% of them and we have no evidence that any of them
- were corrupted by backup/restore... it was just missing some
- files and in some cases, whole directories.
-
- Maynard has acknowledged that their software had some bugs:
-
- -If the software encountered an illegal directory entry like a
- filename with a space in it the software would interpret that
- as being the end of that directory and the softare would hop
- back up the directory tree and continue on with the backup...
- skipping any files or directories after the illegal entry.
-
- -Also, the software would (in incremental backups) sometimes
- (turned out to be quite common in our case) incorrectly read the
- archive bit on files and would thus skip files that should have
- been backed up.
-
- -Currently they have been unable to explain why all but one of
- our print queue directories failed to be restored (a relatively
- small problem) or why all of our user disk quota information was
- lost (a slightly larger problem).
-
- Since they haven't been able to offer explanations for all of the
- irregularities we have found from analyzing all of our backups
- I am not even slightly convinced that they have a reliable backup
- system.
-
- The current revision of MaynStream version 3.1 is engineering
- release 1.14. You can see what revision you're running by entering
- the TMENU utility, selecting the Configuration option and then
- selecting the Notices option (I think I have those option names
- right).
-
- Maynard was very open about acknowledging the software bugs and
- was very prompt in sending us the updated software (at no charge)
- but unfortunately that doesn't replace the missing files or the
- many hours of lost work.
-
- Maynard says they do not offer software maintenance whereby users
- could be notified of software bugs or automatically receive software
- updates (indeed the idea seemed alien to the people I spoke with).
-
- Good luck and happy holidays.
