- We've read with some apprehension about the change that NOTIS has apparently
- made in version 3.1 of GTO in which--as we understand it--overlay will *only*
- work when the OCLC (or RLIN record) control number matches the content of a
- NOTIS 035 field (plus the NUC symbol for the utility). I.e.,
-
- OCLC 001 1131239 --> NOTIS 035 (OCoLC)1131239
-
- In order to increase staff productivity, we have just finished designing a
- workflow which *depends* on an 035 to 035 match, and which works in GTO
- version 3.0 just fine. In this workflow, a person looking for full-level or
- upgraded copy on OCLC for an existing NOTIS record
-
- 1) keys in a duplicate of the NOTIS control number in a local
- 035 field, with our local NUC symbol as a prefix
- 2) deletes any other 035s in the local NOTIS record
- 3) switches to an OCLC session (on the same workstation)
- 4) locates a more desirable OCLC record
- 5) keys the same local NOTIS control number in an 035 in the OCLC
- record (a macro key can be used to save keying and increase
- accuracy)
- 6) issues the OCLC export command
-
- This allows the new OCLC 035 to match the new NOTIS 035, making it possible
- for the user to overlay with just one lookup each in local NOTIS and OCLC...
-
- OCLC NOTIS
- ---------------------- ----------------------
- | 001 11131239 | | Rec.Key: AGE12345 |
- | 035 (NNC)AEG12345 |----->| 035 (NNC)AGE12345 |
- ----------------------- ----------------------
- (In each case the 035 was keyed by local staff.)
-
- This new approach is speeding our workflow substantially.
-

-
- So, I guess my question for those sites who know about this "fix" is: Is it
- true that it will no longer be possible to match 035 to 035 (with non-OCLC/RLG
- control numbers), even as an option? If so, has anyone found another way
- around the time-consuming 4-part lookup required to overlay records in this
- new way? (I.e, NOTIS to find local reccord, OCLC to identify suitable record
- for overlay, NOTIS to input OCLC control number in 035, and OCLC to initiate
- record export.)
