- The following does not decide the size issue of wodges. I wrote
- Mervyn some time back in admiration of what I thought was a
- fine neologism--erroneously remembering it as "glodges"--and he,
- after explaining that it was a common word for an unwonted thickness
- of ink on paper, associated with typesetting rather than penmanship,
- went on to give the following. I trust that, in the spirit of the
- season, Mervyn won't object to my sending it along the line by way
- of a gift to all.

- A few years ago the GUARDIAN (a national high-quality daily with a
- strong appeal to university staff) had an April 1st feature; it ran
- the front pages of all the UK's national dailies as they would have
- dealt with the latest news from the Indian Ocean islands of San
- Serrife... a republic which is drifting slowly around the globe due to
- erosion on one side and sedimentation on the other. It was one of the
- most brilliant sustained bits of humour I have ever encountered. The
- geography of San Serriffe is based on typographical terms; the north
- island is called Caissa Superiore (Upper Caisse) and the south island
- is called... etc. The President (a character who was elected for life
- and married Elizabeth Baskerville) is General Pica, the capital is
- Bodoni, and there are geographical features called Cap Em, the M'Flong
- coast, the towns of Garamondo and Erbar..... it was hysterically
- funny. I kept the whole thing; and I'm looking at the review of
- tourism as the Guardian itself might have featured it: "Although the
- hinterland is still largely swamp, malaria has been almost eradicated,
- and the Highway General Pica drives from the coast to the treacherous
- Woj of Tipe.....)
