-
- OmniImageFilter seems to have provoked a lot of interest!
- I've had a number of requests for copies (on NeXT-L), and I gather Paul
- Burford (NeXT-UK) has been innundated, so I hope the following is of general
- interest...
-
- (On NeXT-L) I pointed out that some of the features of OmniImageFilter are
- similar to those of Pixel Magician's Image Agent. Since a chap at Bacchus
- (I'm not sure if I should say who?) asked for a copy of OmniImageFilter I
- asked if he could give me a quick comparison of the two. Here's a summary of
- his initial findings:
-
- Background
- ----------
- Image Agent(TM) and Pixel Magician(TM) are two separate products. Image Agent
- is a collection of drag/drop image filters for NS 3.0. Pixel Magician is a
- more sophisticated image conversion application providing mass image
- conversion, bi-directional conversions, precise scaling, variable aspect
- ratios and image resolutions, alpha channel support, dithering, color
- quantization and flexible output options. Image Agent is included free with
- Pixel Magician product or can be purchased separately.
-
-
- Initial observations and comparisons between Image Agent and OmniImageFilter
- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
- - Some of the sample image files which the Image Agent filter set can open,
- OmniImageFilter cannot open, e.g. 24 bit PCX files, and many PICT and TGA
- files
-
- - OmniImageFilter seemed to hang e.g. after trying to image a file which it
- could not handle, some of the filter services stopped working altogether.
-
-
- - OmniImageFilter opens images a little faster than Image Agent. Image Agent
- V1.1, now in development, has additional optimisation that should make up
- this small difference in imaging time.
-
- - Image Agent filters understand and maintain alpha channels, dpi/aspect
- ratio information. It was not immediately clear whether OmniImageFilter
- could handle these items, e.g. Pixel Magician was used to create a PICT file
- with 200 Xdpi and 100 Ydpi which OmniImageFilter could not read.
-
- - Image Agent provides an animation on the dock while imaging a file,
- providing valuable feedback.
-
-
- Malcolm's Summary
- -----------------
-
- If you liked OmniImageFilter, you'll probably like Image Agent even more. If
- you're serious about this sort of thing I'd say that $99 is not much to pay.
- The extra functionality of Pixel Magician won it four cubes in the NeXTWORLD
- review, so that should speak for itself! Furthermore, NUG leaders should
- note that there is currently a special offer from Bacchus which should make
- it even more attractive!
-
- Have fun,
-
- Malcolm.
