- Here in Canada, Anton Hykisch is accredited as the CSFR ambassador
- until Jan 1, when he becomes the ambassador of Slovakia.
- the deal so far is that in certain areas of the world, the
- ambassador for the Czech republic will handle Slovak affairs until
- separate embassies are established. That is to say, Hykisch will be
- in charge of Czech affairs here until the Czechs set up their own
- embassy and move out.
- In Washington it is the opposite. Michael Zantofsky is the CSFR
- ambassador Until Jan 1, when he becomes Czech ambassador accredited
- also for Slovak affairs. There will be a Slovak charge d'affaires who
- will work on setting up a separate Slovak embassy. However, at the
- UN there will only be a Slovak ambassador for a while.
- Many embassies in the remoter parts of the world will be closed,
- thus saving some money. In other parts, there will NOT be separate
- embassies for a long time... just mutual agreements. Remember that
- the CSSR and CSFR had about as many embassies as the major world
- powers, because they were largely financed by the KGB. Where Russians
- were mistrusted, it was felt that the StB could be used more easily.
- A lot of the diplomats from the smaller but sensitive (to the
- Russians) areas in Africa, South America and Asia will now be
- reassigned, which means we lucky people in the West will get a lot of
- well-trained Soviet-oriented spies at our embassy cocktail parties.
