  16. Our Library is part of State-funded institution consisting of a teaching
  17. hospital and research facility.  It is the only professionally staffed
  18. medical library in a 100-mile radius, so we have a large number of
  19. unaffiliated professionals, students, and laymen who use our Library, in
  20. addition to our own employees.  We register and circulate books and
  21. audiovisuals freely to local area professionals and health-science students
  22. .  Laymen are generally limited to checking out patient education materials
  23. , which are clearly marked, although exceptions are made from time to time.

  25. Our reference services are definitely impacted by unaffiliated users.
  26. Since the local public library has very limited resources in health
  27. sciences, we act as virtually the only referral center for consumer health
  28. materials, several of which the local health sciences library consortium
  29. has funded for our collection.  Providing reference services to laymen
  30. generally takes us longer than providing such services to professionals and
  31. students, as a lot of labor-intensive "hand-holding" is required.  Since we
  32. are the only medical library around, we take it as part of our mission as a
  33. public institution to at least offer access to our resources, even though
  34. our collection is primarily a professional one.  We are virtually a public
  35. health sciences library, and our lay clientele is increasing.
