  12. Myles, One of our TAs here at Michigan Tech is getting some sort of special
  13. credit for "interning" with an experienced teacher of film. He helps grade
  14. tests, quizzes, papers, etc., prepares and teaches some lessons, and
  15. attends the class. He probably does some other stuff, too. I think he's
  16. getting a lot out of it. Our GTA training program here is designed
  17. primarily for teaching first-year comp, although we have a developing
  18. program for Technical Writing and foreign language instructors. But those
  19. of us teaching or aspiring to teach "odd" courses like film appreciation,
  20. photography, or computer applications, or intro to mass media, are
  21. unevenly mentored. Often, the reason we're teaching such courses is that
  22. the faculty member who usually teaches it is on sabattical or otherwise
  23. unavailable for a particular quarter, which often means he or she is
  24. likewise unavailable to mentor us. The internship program that Tim is
  25. participating in is (could be)a way to plan for an up-coming sabattical without
  26. overly taxing student-teacher, regular teacher, or department resources.
