- ----------------------------Original message----------------------------
- You asked for a way to charge patrons for the paper used in CD-ROM searching.
- You may be familiar with the CopiCard system which can be attached to
- photocopiers and microfilm readers. Surprise! They can also be attached
- to computers.
-
- A circuit board must be added to the CPU. Also, you must have at least
- 640K RAM (1 Mb RAM is better). To give a layman's explanation: there must
- be sufficient RAM for both the CD software and the CopiCard software to
- run at the same time. If there is not enough RAM, then the terminal will
- begin doing all sorts of strange things and finally freeze up every time
- you try to print. Many CD software packages are now very complex with
- graphics and so forth; they use so much of the 640K RAM that there is not
- enough left for the CopiCard software.
-
- If you have enough RAM to run both smoothly, the system works very well.
- You set the CopiCard software to, say, 55 lines equals one page. The
- CopiCard reader will then charge the patron per page of print. If the
- patron tries to print without the CopiCard, he will get the standard
- 'printer is offline' message.
-
- Hope this helps!
