-
- Here's my $0.50. Please take this stuff with a grain of salt, as not
- all of my details may be entirely correct. At work I use PC's with
- MS-DOS, MS-Windows, and Novell Netware. At home I have an
- unaccelerated Amiga 2000 with OS 2.04. I can't comment on 2.1, but I
- can give you a first hand comparison between PC's and Amigas.
-
- Workbench on the Amiga is comparable to Windows on a PC in that both
- are really applications that are run by the operating system, and both
- are used to provide a graphical user interface to launch tasks. But
- that's where the similarity ends.
-
- On a PC, Windows is basically an application masquerading as an
- operating system, or an operating system masquerading as an
- application, or a kluge, depending on how you look at it.
- Multitasking is done by Windows (not by MS-DOS or BIOS).
-
- On the Amiga, Workbench is basically just an application to provide a
- convenient method of launching tasks. Graphics and multitasking are
- already part of the operating system (AmigaDOS). Multitasking is
- integrated into the Amiga at the lowest levels, whereas on the PC
- it's an afterthought.
-
- A major compromise in PC Windows is that you are still using BIOS and
- the MS-DOS filesystem in order to maintain DOS compatibility. At
- some point you will have to switch to "real mode" (8086 mode) to
- access the disk or other BIOS-driven device. In addition, when you
- are in BIOS you can not multitask. Simple things like copying or
- formatting disks in the background are impossible with Windows.
-
- AmigaDOS allows an application to use it's own screen, graphics, and
- windows, independent of all other applications (including
- Workbench). MS-Windows applications are stuck in whatever graphics
- mode that Windows booted up in. If you want to use another graphics
- mode in MS-Windows, you can not multitask.
-
- If you want to run an MS-Windows application, you MUST run Windows.
- If you want to multitask, your application must be designed to run
- with MS-Windows. MS-DOS applications CAN multitask to some extent in
- an MS-DOS window in Windows 3.1 on a 386 or better.
-
- Here are some major advantages of typical AmigaDOS applications (games
- excluded) over Windows applications as I see them:
-
- * Window refresh and response are usually faster
- * Usually require much less memory
- * Take up much less disk space
- * Usually faster than a PC with an equivalent CPU
