- Subject: New Year's Resolutions
-
- Greetings, GOVDOC-L Friends:
- Now that the flurry of mail about the GPO's proposed budget cuts has
- begun to subside, I'd like to suggest a few things all GPO depositories
- should be sure to put on their lists of New Year's Resolutions:
-
- *1) Remember the survey of problem item numbers which was in AdNotes 10/31.
- I suspect a number of us put that aside while filling out the budget
- survey, but it is pertinent. We ask for more specific targeting of docs
- we really want, and one way to do that is make selection more specific.
- This is a good way to target those terrible items with stuff you don't
- want, but have to take in order to get the few series you do. The survey
- is supposed to be in on January 4, but I've been assured by GPO that
- they will continue to accept them for at least another week, maybe more.
- They do need the input - here's a chance for positive contributions.
-
- *2) Be SURE that every member of Congress has had at least one letter from a
- depository in his/her district. Use the beginning of a new Congress as
- an excuse to introduce the depositories to new members, and to remind
- returning ones of the service you provide to their constituents. Contact
- with district offices can be productive - tell them how you can help
- them find information, and what kinds of questions they can refer to
- you. Some of us provide maps with depositories marked - use your
- imagination! Then, after you have extolled the virtues of the depository
- system, you can inform them of how the GPO is funded, and the importance
- of continuing funding to an informed democracy.
-
- *3) Remember to send to Sheila McGarr at GPO your suggestions for depository
- titles or categories which SHOULD be stocked for claims. They have not had
- a lot of input yet. The Minnesota group met and put together the
- following list - you might have other thoughts: all periodical issues, all
- publications from Census, all annual reports, all materials in the sales
- program, all materials from the BLS (some might say all statistical pubs),
- all CD-ROMs. The request for your input was in Wayne Kelley's letter of
- November 18.
-
- *4) Make plans to attend the Depository Library Conference in April, as well
- as ALA. There will be lots of opportunities at these meetings to help
- think about the future of the depository system, federal information,
- new technologies, etc. Be an active player if you can.
-
- Well, now I have to go and scribble these things on my already-long list
- of things to accomplish in 1993. I hope to see many of you in Denver for
- ALA Midwinter. Incidentally, any depository librarians going to the
- inauguration??
-
- Happy New Year.
