- Good morning, gamers!
- Well, I did a little lobbying after reading the postings of the
- members of this esteemed list, and Santa Wife came through with the
- Harpoon signature edition. That means version 3.whatever of the game plus
- all the extra combat scenarios (BattleSets, they're called) and the scenario
- editor.
- I was pretty excited when I unwrapped the game & even more so when
- I got the cover off. No flashy magazines or catalogues, no comic books:
- just simple. black & white instructions (well, maybe not so simple). Must
- be a game for grownups. I did the tutorial & then spent the next six hours
- reading the manual & played some more. I think I have the hang of it now.
- My impressions?
- --WOW--
- I wish I'd had this program when I was a midshipman. It would have
- made all those naval science courses, all those tactical battle problems, a
- lot easier to understand. I select the options that make the readout look
- similar to military one, read up on my platforms, & away I go! I dusted off
- my copies of Norman Polmar's _Ships & Aircraft of the U.S. Fleet_ & _Guide
- to the Soviet Navy_ and compared those books' stats to the ones Harpoon gives
- the player. They match completely, & even the ship names check out, so it
- passes the veracity test.
- On the down side, the graphics are archaic & the interface takes a
- while to get the hang of. I'm already looking forward to Harpoon II. Maybe
- they'll get rid of the pencil-necked staff assistant & bring out some nice
- 32000 color graphics. I hope it's compatible with my current BattleSets,
- whatever the changes.
- Bottom line: super game, if you're into this kind of thing. This is
- the closest I'll get to the real Navy for another 2 1/2 years, so I'm using
- it to tide me over, even if the decisions I make are about 5 or 6 pay grades
- above mine.
- Now that my brief supplementary review is in, may ask a couple of
- questions of Dan & the other Harpooners out there? First, why do I have to
- detach my helicopters to prosecute a submarine contact - shouldn't they do
- it automatically? Also, is there a board where people post their homemade
- scenarios for downloading? I'd be interested in trying a little home brew.
- I know there's a newsgroup out there, but we can't subscribe to them from
- our system, so I appreciate your help.
- Happy gaming,
- Alex

- PS Don't fret, LucasArts. Santa In-Laws (nudged, I'm sure, by Santa Wife)
- gave me a $50.00 gift certificate to Babbage's. When you get your act
- together & get X-Wing Fighter on the shelves & the joystick company
- mails back the Thunderstick I broke & sent to them (go warranty!), I'll
- be there.
