- I found 'The HUMANS!' to be amusing and fun to play. It's a lot like
- 'Lemmings' except that the humans are static - they only move if you make one
- move. Each board has a different number of humans allowed, and you swap
- between them (like switching Windows in MSWin) to accomplish goals like finding
- the spear and rescuing your pet dinosaur.
- Control was quite easy, most of the boards not too difficult. A couple
- were brain-numbers until I looked at the particular problem "upside down" then
- it all came clear. After succeeding at major objectives (like discovering
- fire, the spear, etc.) there are full-screen animated vignettes - they are all
- quite amusing.
- My only complaint - one serious enough for me to return the damn game -
- is that it seems to be full of bugs. Certain dinosaurs take multiple
- spear-hits to kill, but after the first hit, they become a randomized mess of
- pixels. You can still continue, but it's a mess on the screen and harder than
- hell to hit again. The game was also prone to locking up, necessitating
- hitting the <RESET> button on the CPU, as the keyboard got totally locked out.
- I tried numerous "clean boot" configs in hope that these problems might be due
- to TSR conflict, but alas, no luck. The game also came with both 5.25" and
- 3.5" disks, and I tried installs from both sets, in case only one set was bad.
- No luck. Looks like there really are some significant bugs in the code. (Any
- feedback from other HUMANS! players?) And there was no customer service ph#
- listed ANYWHERE. *grumble*
- Oh yeah - the game also has off-disk protection: an annoying sheet with
- little icons with code #s underneath each icon. The game shows you an icon,
- you respond with the appropriate code. Not too bad (Wiz6 was infinintely
- worse in that respect) but a hassle to deal with.
-
- Bottom line is: if you can get a bug-free copy then do so! The game
- was a lot of fun. Otherwise, leave it on the shelf.
