  35. The 1993 International Conference on Humor and Laughter is an
  36. international conference sponsored by the Center for Human Development,
  37. Learning and Teaching at Miami University, Oxford, Ohio, the Miami
  38. University John Dolibois  European Center in Luxembourg, the Centre
  39. Universitaire de Luxembourg, and the International Society for Humor
  40. Studies (ISHS). Each ISHS annual conference serves as an
  41. interdisciplinary form for the dissemination of information on the
  42. research, development, and applications of humor and laughter from
  43. a wide variety of disciplines.

  45. SCOPE

  47. The Conference welcomes research, development and application proposal
  48. submissions on all topics related to humor and laughter from scholars
  49. of all disciplines.  We invite you to participate in the Humor 93
  50. Conference by submitting proposals for papers, workshops, panels, and
  51. demonstrations/posters. All proposals are reviewed for inclusion in the
  52. conference program.

  54. CONFERENCE HISTORY
  55. ------------------
  56. The international humor conferences tie together a number of strands
  57. of activities that have been present since the 1st conference in 1976,
  58. held in Cardiff, Wales, and other subsequent conferences: Los Angeles;
  59. Washington, D.C.; Tel Aviv, Israel; Cork, Ireland; Phoenix, Arizona;
  60. West Lafayette, Indiana; Sheffield, England; St. Catharines, Ontario,
  61. Canada; and the most recent conference in Paris, France, in 1992.

  64.                       SUBMISSION OF PROPOSALS
  65.                       =======================

  67. The Program includes a wide range of interesting and useful activities
  68. designed to facilitate the exchange of ideas and information.  The
  69. program includes invited talks, paper presentations, poster sessions,
  70. workshops, and panel discussions.
  71.  
  72. PAPERS (approximately 25 minutes long)
  73. --------------------------------------
  74. Papers present reports of significant work or integrative reviews in
  75. research, development, and applications related to humor studies.
  76. Submissions: Papers should include a cover page and an extended
  77. abstract of at least 300 words.  The cover page should include the
  78. title of the paper with presenter names, affiliations, complete
  79. addresses, phone numbers, and E-mail address of the principal
  80. presenter. Papers may be submitted in hard copy, printed form (send 5
  81. copies) or in electronic form via E-mail. Electronic proposals are
  82. preferred and must be in ASCII format. Final papers must be submitted
  83. in photo-reproducible form according to specifications made available
  84. upon acceptance. Each 25-minute session should include 5 minutes for
  85. discussion.  Each proposal must state what AV equipment is needed.

  87. PANELS/SYMPOSIA (1 or 1.5 hours)
  88. --------------------------------
  89. A panel offers an opportunity for 3-5 people to present their views or
  90. results on a common theme, issue, or question.  Panels should cover
  91. timely topics related to the conference areas of interest. Panel
  92. selection will be based on the importance, originality, focus, and
  93. timeliness of the topic, as well as the potential for informative (and
  94. even controversial) discussion.  Panels should have no more than 5
  95. members, including the chair, and should be planned for 1 or 1.5 hours
  96. in length.

  98. Submissions: Panel proposals should include 1) A description of the
  99. panel topic, including why this topic is important to ISHS Conference
  100. attendees; no more than 1 page; and 2) a brief position statement of
  101. each panelist; no more than 1 page each.  A cover sheet should include
  102. the panel title, panelists' names and affiliations, and the panel
  103. organizer's name, affiliation, address, E-mail address and phone
  104. number. Indicate tHe panel time required. Electronic proposals are
  105. preferred and must be in ASCII format.

  107. DEMONSTRATIONS/POSTERS (1 hour)
  108. -------------------------------
  109. Demonstration/Poster sessions enable researchers to demonstrate and
  110. discuss their latest results and development in progress in order to
  111. gain feedback and to establish contact with similar projects.
  112. Demonstration/Poster sessions do not involve a formal presentation.
  113.  
  114. Submissions: Demonstration/Poster proposals should include a 3-page or
  115. less written description of the planned demonstration/poster and should
  116. emphasize the problem; what was done; and why the work is important.
  117. It should be clear from the proposal the advantages of presenting the
  118. material in the form of a demonstration/poster rather than a paper. The
  119. cover page should include the title of the session with presenter
  120. names, affiliations, complete addresses, phone numbers, and E-mail
  121. address of the principal presenter. Electronic proposals are preferred
  122. and must be in ASCII format.

  124. WORKSHOPS (approximately 3 hours or less)
  125. ------------------------
  126. Workshops are intended to enhance the skills and broaden the
  127. perspective of their attendees.  Workshops should be designed to
  128. provide advanced technical training in an area or to introduce a
  129. rigorous framework for learning a new area.  Workshops will be selected
  130. on the basis of the instructors' qualifications for teaching the
  131. proposed workshop and the contribution of the workshop to the overall
  132. conference program.

  134. Submissions: Proposals should include a clear description of the
  135. workshop objectives, the intended audience, the length (eg., 3 hours)
  136. a 200-word abstract, a 1-page topical outline of the workshop content,
  137. and a description of the instructor's qualifications for teaching the
  138. proposed workshop. Each proposal must state what AV equipment is
  139. needed. Electronic proposals are preferred and must be in ASCII format.

  142. INFORMATION FOR PARTICIPATION

  144. - All communication will be with the proposal's principal presenter.

  149. - The conference will attempt to secure all equipment needed for
  150.   presenters.  However, where special equipment is needed, presenters
  151.  
  152.   may be asked to bring their own equipment.
