- Just one small question: Is there plans to register the domain
- "BITNET" or some derivitive that the Internet Assigned Number Agency
- might approve of, i.e. like "BIT.NET" so that these addresses will
- have {real} bitnet addresses?
-
- Right now, for the messages I receive from listserv processors that
- are not also Internet addresses, about 75% come from an address on
- the order of "LIST-NAME%HOST.BITNET@PUCC.PRINCETON.EDU" and about
- 25% come from "LIST-NAME%HOST.BITNET@CUNYVM.CUNY.EDU".
-
- The fact is that there are more than enough gateways that handle
- bitnet traffic (7 if I remember correctly) to allow bitnet addresses
- to be accessible as "public" names, i.e. to have PUCC.PRINCETON.EDU
- be MX'ed to PUCC.BITNET, or if IANA won't allow that, to something
- like "PUCC.BIT.NET" so that people don't have to *guess* how to
- get something to a Bitnet address.
-
- Anyone have any reason why BITNET addresses are still having to be
- gatewayed instead of allowing them direct access? Some places have
- dual addresses anyway so it shouldn't be too much of a problem
- (if having multiple "names" for a single address was a problem,
- UUNET would never have gotten off the ground. (UUNET.UU.NET has
- several thousand users many having their own private domains.)
-
- I for one would like to know as I think it is a major thorn in
- the side of Bitnet. Hosts on BITNET that do not have direct
- internet access could simply do what is being done now: go through
- CUNY or Princeton or any of the other gateways, but it would fix
- one major problem about being reachable from the outside world.
