  12. THE CIRCUMCISION OF CHRIST, OR, THE HOLY NAME OF JESUS (1 JAN)

  14. On January 1st, we celebrate the Circumcision of Christ. Since we
  15. are more squeamish than our ancestors, modern calendars often list
  16. it as the feast of the Holy Name of Jesus, but the other emphasis is
  17. the older.  Every Jewish boy was circumcised (and formally named) on
  18. the eighth day of his life, and so, one week after Christmas, we
  19. celebrate the occasion when Our Lord first shed His blood for us. It
  20. is a fit close for a week of martyrs, and reminds us that to suffer
  21. for Christ is to suffer with Him.

  23. PRAYERS (traditional language):
  24.    Almighty God, who madest thy blessed Son to be circumcised, and
  25.    obedient to the law for man; Grant us the true circumcision of
  26.    the Spirit; that, our hearts, and all our members, being
  27.    mortified from all worldly and carnal lusts, we may in all
  28.    things obey thy blessed will; through the same thy Son Jesus
  29.    Christ our Lord.

  31.    Eternal Father, who didst give to thine incarnate Son the holy
  32.    name of Jesus to be the sign of our salvation: Plant in every
  33.    heart, we beseech thee, the love of him who is the Savior of
  34.    the world, even our Lord Jesus Christ; who liveth and reigneth
  35.    with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, in glory everlasting.

  40.    of the Spirit; that, having been cleansed in body and mind from
