- Hi Bent,
-
- First let's start with a dumb question. What is PP?.
- Here at the University of Amsterdam at this moment using the Vines SMTP
- mailgateway have the following solution (not yet completely realized):
-
- - Each Vines-group with user's has a streettalk-name with the organisation
- part set to the Internet domain-name. For instance the facult of phychologie
- has Internet-domain psy.uva.nl. So a Vines user in that faculty will have a
- Streettalk name in the form:
- name@group@psy.uva.nl
- - If a user send mail through the an SMTP mail gateway the frim field will
- have the form:
- name%group%subdomain.uva.nl@host.....uva.nl
- - The SMTP mail gateway is forced to send all mail to a Unix host. This is
- accomplished by NOT entering DNS ip numbers in the TCP/IP configuration of
- the Vines server on wich the gateway is installed.
- - By a simple rule in the Unix sendmail.cfg file
- name%group%subdomain.uva.nl@host....uva.nl
- is translated to
- name@subdomain.uva.nl
- This is for outgoing mail. For incoming mail again a Unix host is called to
- the rescue. Using nicknames to deliver incoming mail, is very cumbersome
- especially when using a single gateway for multiple subdomains. So each
- subdomain is required to have a DNS, wich using aliases translate to neat
- Internet mail-address, to the ugly vines SMTP mail address.
-
- I'm planning to have a test with the Incognito SMTP mail gateway. According to
- the info supplied by our Vines reseller this gateway has a feature for using
- aliases on outgoing mail. Other features (binary attachments using
- uuencode/uudecode) end-to-end encryption are also promising. Furthermore they
- have a DNS-service for Vines.
- I hope the above product will bring all the Unix management needed in our
- current solution back to the (distributed) Vines administrators.
-
- Greetings
- Frank Koperdraat
