  16.         I don't use Sun's SunNet Manager on our network. I DO use HP's OpenView
  17. product that is quite similar in function to SunNet manager. For HP's OpenView
  18. I needed to add entries in the /etc/community file on the UNIX box that runs the
  19. SNMP software. Entries look something like this:

  28. To describe this in more "human" terms:
  29.         In the /etc/community file, several things must happen for all of your
  30. VINES servers to be reachable via SNMP.
  31. 1. You must install the VINES SNMP agent on a VINES server that already has the
  32. TCP/IP routing software installed.
  33. 2. Verify that your SNMP Manager can talk to that VINES server. That would be
  34. via a 'simple' entry in /etc/community like the XYZ entry above.
  35. 3. Add other servers to the system (with HP's OpenView you need to both add them
  36. to the map as well as to the /etc/community file.
  37. 4. For _other_ VINES servers that will be queried by the one VINES server that's
  38. running the SNMP Agent, you must add them and say that vines_snmp_host is their
  39. proxy host (all queries go via vines_snmp_host ).

  42. In addition, there's an update to the VINES SNMP agent that will allow you to
  43. use different community strings and fixes a couple of bugs with the Agent. I
  44. don't have the update yet but I believe it is available from Banyan.
