- Brian;
- I don't use Sun's SunNet Manager on our network. I DO use HP's OpenView
- product that is quite similar in function to SunNet manager. For HP's OpenView
- I needed to add entries in the /etc/community file on the UNIX box that runs the
- SNMP software. Entries look something like this:
-
- HOSTNAME COMMUNITY (PROXY)
- ======== ========= =======
- XYZ public
-
- vinesserver public@vinesserver vines_snmp_host
-
-
- To describe this in more "human" terms:
- In the /etc/community file, several things must happen for all of your
- VINES servers to be reachable via SNMP.
- 1. You must install the VINES SNMP agent on a VINES server that already has the
- TCP/IP routing software installed.
- 2. Verify that your SNMP Manager can talk to that VINES server. That would be
- via a 'simple' entry in /etc/community like the XYZ entry above.
- 3. Add other servers to the system (with HP's OpenView you need to both add them
- to the map as well as to the /etc/community file.
- 4. For _other_ VINES servers that will be queried by the one VINES server that's
- running the SNMP Agent, you must add them and say that vines_snmp_host is their
- proxy host (all queries go via vines_snmp_host ).
-
-
- In addition, there's an update to the VINES SNMP agent that will allow you to
- use different community strings and fixes a couple of bugs with the Agent. I
- don't have the update yet but I believe it is available from Banyan.
-
- Let me know if you have any more questions.
