  12. I think there's a serious need for members of this list to be educated
  13. about abuse issues: what constitutes abusive behavior; how victims are
  14. affected; characteristic behavior patterns of abusers, including whether
  15. and under what circumstances they're likely to change; how abuse can be
  16. either prevented or facilitated by the behavior of others; and special
  17. concerns regarding autistic people and abuse.  These are important issues
  18. because autistic people are particularly vulnerable (nearly 100% of the
  19. high-functioning autistic people I know have been sexually abused at some
  20. point in their lives); because people on the list need to know how to
  21. protect themselves, their children, and their students; and because I
  22. have been left feeling personally threatened and endangered by the
  23. fact that an abusive person was allowed free access to the list for
  24. months and has now been re-introduced with no apparent understanding
  25. of the implications.
  26.
  27. I have invited Derrick Smith to visit this list for a while to help teach
  28. people about abuse.  Derrick is a section leader of an online support group
  29. for survivors of abuse, and can discuss various forms of abuse,
  30. including physically, emotionally, verbally, and sexually abusive
  31. behavior.
