- Jeff Beer sez:

- >On the issue of female musicians, she is distinctly anti-feminist. She
- >was intervewed by someone who was going to make a book on women jazz
- >musicians, and her first response was "why would anyone want to do
- >that?" When they try pin it on how hard it is for women to make it in

- >built in thick head on ignoring that. For instance, she will say, "my
- >band members said there were hecklers telling me to do the dishes, but I
- >didn't hear them"
-
- Remember, Bley was leading bands when there were damn few women
- sidemen (unintentional humor here, I think). She paid enough dues
- that she can say anything she wants on the subject of feminism.
- For a musician, it's not a matter of a glass ceiling; it's whether
- you'll get the gig or get the label to promote the record -- it's basic
- survival and ability to earn a living.
-
- However, isn't it at least possible, remembering her notorious sense
- of humor, that she was putting the interviewer on?
- ------------------------------------------------------------------------
- So it's Doctor Sonia, eh? Damn, this list is entirely too high class.
-
- Sonia, let me quote my hero Winston Churchill when asked by an
- American high school student for advice: "Never give up. Never, never
- never. Never give up." Tell you what. You've already heard half
- of a tape of my crap. How could your music be worse? Plug in your mic
- and wail and send it out to a couple of us and we'll tell you whether
- or not to give up.
-
- Incidentally, I got to hear one of the Blues Roots tapes all the way
- through. "Too Many Dirty Dishes" is absolutely electrifying. If you're
- judging your playing against him, you're being unfair to yourself.
- Nobody's that good. I swear a review follows. I feel really lousy
- about not doing one before. I finally made the Kenton tape 2. If
- I can get my dubbing deck to work, do you want one?
- ------------------------------------------------------------------------
- Hey, c'mon ALLMUSICers. Who does "I Am Santa Claus" (the parody on
- "Iron Man")? The people at our record store were clueless.
- ------------------------------------------------------------------------
- Listened to the Gary Burton/Pat Metheny record _Reunion_ this
- weekend. Really nice stuff. It's a pleasure to hear Metheny play
- more straight ahead and show off some his formidable technique.
-
- Also heard some Poulenc choral pieces. Very unimpressed. Typical
- Robert Shaw emasculated-basses sound. Between him and Dale Warland,
- it's a miracle a "manly" sounding chorister can get a job! The
- Poulenc shouldn't have been done like an opera chorus, but it
- shouldn't have been done like this, either. Definitely soporific.
