  26. I ask you to write to the WASC to encourage them to add "Sexual
  27. Orientation" to their Policy Statement of Diversity.  Following is a
  28. clipping from the December 1992 GLAAD/LA REPORTS:

  30. ACCREDITING DISCRIMINATION
  31.  
  32.      The Western College Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC)
  33. Accrediting Commission for Senior Colleges and Universities has recently
  34. released a draft of a proposed Policy Statement on Diversity which
  35. explicitly excludes sexual minorities.  The statement reaffirms that any
  36. institution to be accredited must "demonstrate its commitment to the
  37. increasingly significant role played by diversity of ethnic, social and
  38. economic background among its members by making positive efforts to foster
  39. such diversity."  In further defining "diversity," the statement clarifies
  40. that WASC standards "make no mention of sexual orientation.  Institutions
  41. accredited by this commission follow varying policies based upon
  42. institutional mission and religious conviction."  In plain English,
  43. colleges and universities are invited to discriminate against, and ignore
  44. the concerns of lesbian and gay students and staff, without their bigotry
  45. affecting their accreditation.

  47. The WASC is accepting comment on its proposed policy before making a final
  48. draft in Feb.  Write the Commission and explain to them that its proposed
  49. Policy Statement on Diversity explicitly recognizes homophobia and
  50. discrimination against lesbian, gay and bisexual people.  Remind them that
  51. any type of bigotry is unacceptable.  Write to:  Sister Magdelan Coughlin,
