  12. I've fantasized about setting up my own cable company - probably non-profit
  13. along the lines of the old Berkeley CO-OP. You could start with just a
  14. dish and lay cable out from wherever you start from as you get subscribers,
  15. maybe even say to-hell-with-the-regulators and do a guerilla cable company.

  17. In a similar vein it dawn on me recently that in Berkeley you could set up
  18. your own phone company - just pop a box on a hill and using a combination of
  19. cell-phone technology and millimeter microwave technology (after all all the
  20. stations are fixed and can just have a little dish) - this works great in a
  21. place like Berkeley where almost the whole town is visible from the hill above
  22. it. Of course it would ALL be digital.

  24. Of course you can combine the two systems - snarf a lot of bandwidth, maybe
  25. 500MHz and do both. Or combine them in another way - use fiber to deliver one
  26. end of the signal (phone and video) and cell-phone to talk back.

  28. I think it's a great idea - now's the time - but then again I don't want
  29. a couple of the biggest companies around (with LOTs of lawyers) breathing
  30. down my neck.
