- In the alt.locksmithing FAQ, this appears:
-
- >7. How do I open a Kryptonite lock?
- >
- > Hardest: Chill the metal of the "U" with liquid Nitrogen or
- > Freon, smash with hammer. While this is a "well known" method,
- > it may be an urban legend.
-
- This sounds inexcusable. They could just have easily
- made the lock of an austenitic metal, that shows no tendency to
- embrittle at low temperatures. In fact, most become both stronger
- and tougher at low temperature. Examples include aluminum, copper and
- common stainless steel. It's metallurgy. I will not describe it, so
- don't bother even asking about it. Cost would seem to be the main drawback.
- An austenitic alloy of sufficient hardness and strength, like those used
- in jet engines, costs big bucks. But, so do kryptonite locks and
- THE CLUB (tm).
-
- By the way, some have said on AFU that liquid nitrogen is a big
- hassle to haul around. A simple thermos bottle works just fine, and
- LN2 costs less then milk. It also is not particularly dangerous.
-
- The reason I post to alt.folklore.urban is that a post to
- alt.locksmithing will get a response like the following quote:
-
- >this isn't picking. it's brute force. There's a large difference....
- >Let't try and stick to locksmithing, not vandalism.
- ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
-
- That has to be adaptable into an AFU motto of the fortnight.
-
- ObUL: During WW11, the USA built ships that sailed to the
- "Cold North Atlantic" (tm) , cracked in half, and sunk.
