- I'm really surprised no one mentioned the failed boycott. For
- those of you who are unaware, about 2 years ago (sorry my memory is
- going already) a large percentage of the AustinCablevision workers went
- on strike (20-30%?) and they asked that customers disconnect and send a
- letter to both AustinCablevision and the local Communication Worker's
- Union. They complained that the manager was engaging in unfair labor
- practices. (Discouraging/prohibiting the union.)
-
- Like alot of people, my girlfriend and i decided to send the letters
- and cut the service. I think the strike was in the news for a week or
- two (two weeks in the Chronicle) and the faded out. From what i
- remember it dragged on for a LONG time and some of the strikers were
- fired. That was the rather sad resolution of the strike, as far as i
- know. (If anyone has a better recollection of events, please correct
- me.) I still have no Cable television. I habitually snort and mutter
- invectives when i get the obnoxious Austin Cablevision advertisements in
- the mail, and then crumple them up and throw them in the trash.
-
- I mention this because i'd be a little surprised if you were able to
- organize an effective boycott, now that the first strike was broken, or
- perhaps more accurately, shrugged off. However, personally, i'd
- encourage everyone to send a letter in, cut the service and read more
- books.
