- According to an AP article in the 12/17/92 Austin American Statesman, Secret
- Service Agents "targeted three suspects they say tapped into Texas Tech's
- computer system to create a worldwide electronic bulletin board that
- distributed pirated software."
-
- In what should come as no surprise to those of us who follow these
- types of stories, no arrests have been made. Nonetheless, the SS
- seized about $5,000 of equipment according to the report.
-
- The accused are identified as two 21 year old Tech students and a
- 20 year old former stufent. The article is poorly written, and
- alternates between calling these guys pirates and referring to the
- bulletin board as being run by "hackers." Apparently, the students
- have admitted to pirating "at least $6,000" of software this
- summer. The 20 year-old had been expelled from the university in
- July for "misusing" the computer.
-
- A "monitoring team from Pittsburgh" conducted a six-month
- investigation, but nothing in the article clarifies whether the
- team included SS men or not.
-
- The most disturbing part of the story is the attached photo, which
- shows Secret Service agent Steve Barker posing with the seized
- equipment as he was a DEA agent posing with bales of marijuana.
-
- If anyone has any more information on this, please pass it along,
- as the article was sorely lacking in important facts.
-
- Thanks,
-
