  12. SOMETHING funny is going on here. You might have seen the ads for
  13. Microsoft Access (their new Windows database product), which is on
  14. "special offer" at $149 (the ads say that the price is only while
  15. stocks last, or end of February, after which the price goes up to
  16. the "RRP" of $1095). Ok, that ad sounds a bit flakey, but I bought
  17. it, and I think it's well worth the $149.

  19. The funny thing is this: I go into my local dealer (a fairly reputable
  20. place in the Sydney CBD near where I work....)

  22. "Hi, do you have Microsoft Access yet?"

  24. "It's on back order, but I do have a couple of copies somebody ordered
  25. but didn't pick up. Can you pay cash?"

  27. "Oh, I'll wait until you get more copies in" I go to another dealer
  28. who say they haven't received ANY copies yet. Later I read a review
  29. which gives the product a good report, so rather than having to pay
  30. $1K later, I get the cash and go back to the first dealer.

  32. He asks me to come into the back room (won't bring it out on the shop
  33. floor...), takes my cash, and says he'll send the invoice to me in
  34. the mail.

  36. Bit odd, isn't it? As I said, I'm quite happy with the product, as much
  37. as I've used it in the last week, but I think it's strange that
  38. I couldn't buy it direct from Microsoft, and that all this back-room
  39. dealing (literally!) is going on. If I wer buying drugs from this dealer,
  40. I don't think he could have been more secretive.

  42. (The other thing was that three work colleagues had also ordered Access
  43. from these guys, and they were still waiting for theirs...)

  45. Anyone have similar experiences with accessing Access?
