  24. ** Introduction
  25.  
  26. The Internet site, monu6.cc.monash.edu.au, mirrors the United States
  27. Windows3 archive site ftp.cica.indiana.edu. It includes Windows3 tips,
  28. utilities and demonstrations. The archive currently maintains well over
  29. 210 megabytes of Windows3-related material. The files are not virus checked,
  30. nor tested for functionality, so you must assume full responsibility for
  31. their use on your machine.  
  32.  
  33. ** Access
  34.  
  35. Ftp access to monu6 is quite simple:  type "ftp monu6.cc.monash.edu.au"
  36. to your prompt. You'll be asked for a login name (type "anonymous"). Enter
  37. username@hostname.domain for a password. This is optional but will help
  38. us gather statistics for gauging the popularity of this archive.
  39.  
  40. If you don't have ftp access but have access to "fetchfile" then try the
  41. following commands:
  42.   fetchfile -dmonu6.cc.monash.oz pub/ls-lR              [fetch directory list]
  43.   fetchfile -dmonu6.cc.monash.oz pub/win3/util/at.zip  [fetch an example file]
  44.  
  45. ** Getting Software:  The INDEX and ls-ltR Files
  46.  
  47. Go into the win3 directory ("cd pub/win3"), and see what we have by
  48. getting the ASCII file called "INDEX"  (type "get INDEX" to your ftp
  49. prompt).  The file "pub/ls-lR" is an output from the "ls -lR" command on
  50. the entire public ftp directory structure.  This file presents an ordered
  51. list of the files in each subdirectory. The file "pub/ls-lR.Z" is the
  52. compressed version of this list of files, but you must type "bin" or
  53. "tenex" before getting the compressed version.
  54.  
  55. The archive is updated daily at 10:00 PM AEST.
  56.  
  57. ** Downloading Software
  58.  
  59. Most of the Windows 3 archives are in "zip" archives for which you will
  60. need the pkunzip utility. A copy of pkunzip can be found in the pub/pc 
  61. directory on monu6.cc.monash.edu.au
  62.  
  63. Change into individual directories (e.g., "cd pub/win3/fonts") and issue
  64. a "dir" or "ls" command to see the available files.  When you are ready
  65. to download, tell ftp you're transferring binary files (type "tenex"
  66. or "binary" to your ftp prompt) and you're ready to fetch files ("get
  67. filename").
  68.  
  69. ** Uploading Software
  70.  
  71. Windows files should be uploaded to the primary source of the archive which
  72. is ftp.cica.indiana.edu. Your upload will automatically appear on monu6 the
  73. next time cica is mirrored.
  74.  
  75. If, for some reason, you feel that you must upload a file to monu6, then
  76. please place all uploads in the "pub/uploads" subdirectory and send mail
  77. to "steve@cc.monash.edu.au" BRIEFLY describing your contribution. The
  78. same rules apply to uploading as downloading:  if the file is a PC
  79. binary, type "tenex" or "bin" first before doing a "put filename".
  80.  
  81. I would like to set some sort of standard file format here so that you
  82. don't need fifteen different file compression utilities to unwrap the
  83. software.  Therefore, please use PKZIP (version 1.1 or later) or ZOO
  84. (version 2.00 or later) to wrap your software.

  86. ** A Note About Bitmap Files (.BMP)
  87.  
  88. Since the inception of this archive in June 1990, many thousands of
  89. users have had access to these files, and hence, plenty of time to
  90. "snarf and share" the bitmap images with their friends, families, and
  91. their favorite local bulletin boards and ftp sites.  Therefore, the
  92. images stored here will age six months and then they are purged.  This
  93. is the only relief valve we currently have to keep disk space alive
  94. for the other files.

  102. Please, PLEASE remember to type "TENEX" or "bin" to your ftp program
  103. *BEFORE* uploading or downloading binary files. You will end up getting
  104. "corrupt files" if you didn't type "tenex" or "bin" before downloading.

  106. If you are using KERMIT to transfer from your Unix host to your PC,
  107. remember to tell kermit "set file type binary" before beginning the
  108. download.
