  22. I think James and I can speak with reasonable authority. Both of us
  23. have operated public access systems and it costs a _lot_. I'm running
  24. a system in Melbourne (zikzak.apana.org.au), and all up it has cost me
  25. over fifteen thousand dollars. I considered charging but a few simple
  26. sums revealed that without bleeding my users dry there was absolutely
  27. no way I could make back even a fraction of the cost.

  29. That's ok by me. I do it for the fun, not for the money. Just as do
  30. the people who run the hundreds of free bulletin boards around
  31. Australia. That's why PAX is going to have a struggle ahead of it -
  32. how can it hope to compete with other systems which have much lower
  33. charges?
