- Portability. An internal modem can only be used in the hardware it
- was built for, and requires opening the case (read: minor to major
- hassle) to move it from one box to another.

- An external modem will work on an IBM PC, a Mac, a Unix box, and any of
- a zillion other proprietary systems that use serial ports. The only
- hassle is unplugging and plugging in a cable.
