  27. -In a 1988 survey of 500 adolescents who applied for services at
  28. The Hetrick-Martin Institute (A Lesbian & Gay Youth Social
  29. Service Agency in New York City), 46% had suffered violence
  30. from family, friends and/or strangers. Of those who experienced
  31. violence, 44% reported suicidal ideation (seriously
  32. contemplating suicide) and 41% of the females and 34% of the
  33. males had actually made suicide attempts. (Joyce Hunter, 1989)

  35. -The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS)
  36. Task Force on Youth Suicide issued a report in January of 1989
  37. concluding that lesbian and gay youthconstitute "up to
  38. thirty percent of completed suicides annually" and that
  39. "homosexuals of both sexes are two to six times more likely to
  40. attempt suicide then are heterosexuals." (DHHS, Report of the
  41. Secretary's Task Force on Youth Suicide, ed. Marcia R. Feinlieb,
  42. 1989

  44. -A 1988-1991 survey of predominately African American and
  45. Latino Gay and Bisexual Male Youth at The Hetrick-Martin
  46. Institute found that 38.6% had attempted suicide. This report
  47. also reported a high rate of attempted and completed suicide
  48. among the gay/bisexual youth's friends (35% and 16%,
  49. respectively) and family (17% and 12% respectively)

  52. -An uncompleted national study of youth attending Lesbian and
  53. Gay Youth Support Groups has already found that in 2 non-
  54. Boston based Lesbian and Gay Youth Groups in The
  55. Commonwealth 41% of the youth had attempted suicide and an
  56. additional 36% reported seriously considering it.
