  30. forgive me for intruding into this dialogue, but i'm moved to point
  31. out the obvious here--that is, that it is at least problematic to
  32. assume that the "authoritative" stats compiled and distributed by
  33. law enforcement offer the "truth" about how many hate crimes are
  34. being committed while the figures offered by "partisan" groups are
  35. much less accurate.  it is no secret that "official" stats on hate
  36. crimes, domestic abuse, white collar crime, and quite a few other
  37. categories are challenged frequently and often powerfully by
  38. various "partisan" groups who see the police stats as underreported
  39. due to systemic bias (and not conspiracy theories).
