- According to U2's official magazine, the moment U2 was asked to get Island/
- Polygram to drop the suit, U2 complied and did so successfully. Unfortunately
- for SST Records, SST screwed up and didn't ask until after the court case was
- over and they found themselves with a $70,000 bill.
-
- So now, SST is excused from paying the fine, but still has to pay Island's
- court costs of US$50,000. I've noticed Negativland left SST high and dry after
- agreeing to pay some of the costs and now refuses to pay for even one penny.
- Nice guys. Consider SST's people a bunch of flaming boneheads for not even
- contacting U2 before the court date. SST also asked U2 to do a benefit
- concert, also after the court date. I haven't heard if U2 agreed. If Bruce
- can donate $25,000 of each concert's gross to local charities, this seems
- reasonable.
-
- The costs of getting the licenses needed to release the single was just a
- few hundred dollars (300, I think). As U2's manager said, U2 didn't even get
- a chance to show their Irish sense of humor.
-
- And now to anticipate arguements against U2:
- If you want help, you gotta speak up. U2 probably assumed that if SST needed
- help, they would have asked for it. It's not like they had SST's balance sheet
- in front of them.
- Just because SST is small doesn't mean they should get just a slap on the
- wrist. Like it or not, they were the responsible party for the commission of a
- FELONY crime.
- Sure, it would be nice if U2 helped raise funds. It would be nice if
- they did a lot of things, but it's not a sin to not help either. (did you
- follow that? enough 'nots' for you?) A stitch in time saves nine, charity
- begins at home, and brevity is the essence of wit.
-
- sorry, can't rebut until long after this article (and the rebuttals) expires.
