- A brief history of Exist Dance
-
- Exist Dance Records is a label from los angeles run by two guys - mike and
- tom. they started putting out records just for the hell of it and haven't
- really given much thought to distribution or a masterplan, so their stuff
- can be hard to come by. shame, cos most of their stuff is absolutely
- brilliant. hard to pigeonhole as they try out every genre that tickles
- their fancy at least once.
-
- They like to play with the vinyl medium - some of the records have lock
- grooves, music in the run out grooves, wide gaps in the middle of tracks
- with inscriptions, etc... it can be quite fun to take an ED release and see
- what they've packed into it.
-
- Here's a quick run down of what they've released so far:
-
- ED001 - details are a bit sketchy cos we've only got a blue label
- version. side A has two tracks, both slow and hip hop oriented. side
- B has a remix of A1.
-
- ED002 - Tranquility Bass
- A1 - They Came In Peace
- B1 - They Came In Peace (Lunar Dub)
- B2 - Lucifaze
- B3 - Lucid Beats
-
- this one is amazing. A1 is a slow, acoustic bass oriented number. B1
- is an incredible dub bass version of A1. possibly my favorite ED
- track. B2 is also very good, and B3 is just the beat from B2.
-
- ED003 - our copy is a white label so I don't know the track names.
- A1 - a sort of generic housey piece
- A2 - ambient water splashes and some documentary narrator voice
- B1 - remix of A1
- B2 - hard kickin track with a lot of sampled ragga shouts
-
- ED004 - High Lonesome Sound System
- A1 - We're Go (Stage 1)
- A2 - We're Go (Stage 2)
- A3 - We're Go (Stage 3)
- B1 - Testimonial
- B2 - Psychic Dreaming
-
- The "We're Go" suite is a very long collection of tracks held together
- by samples from the astronauts saying "we're go." It starts off bassy
- and hyper, gets all mellow in the middle, and kicks back in for stage
- 3. The two b side tracks are more of the buzzy bass/house stuff that
- ED loves.
-
- ED005 - Eden Transmission
- A1 - I'm So High
- A2 - I'm So High (Ubud Mix)
- B1 - Transmission: Maya
- B2 - Powertrance
-
- ED goes trance. The two mixes on the a-side are run together for
- a continuous non stop brain melting trance. The song uses pulsating
- bass, star trek transporter sounds and a woman gasping "i'm so high".
- Incredible. I don't care for the Ubud mix which has too much melody.
- I prefer the single note attack of the first mix. The b side tracks
- are more fine trance workout although nothing can top the godlike A
- side.
-
- ED006 - Odyssey 2000
- A1 - The Odyssey (Nebula Mix)
- A2 - The Odyssey (Terra Firma Mix)
- B1 - Hop on Pop
- B2 - Hop on Pop (dub)
-
- The first ED track not by Tom & Mike. Unfortunately, it's not as good as
- their stuff, being rather more straightforward harder (but fortunately not
- hardcore) techno. The A side uses buzzy bass and battlestar galactica cylon
- voices, the B side just uses buzzy bass. Not bad, not great.
-
- ED007 - Voodoo Transmission
- A1 - Voodoo Fire
- A2 - Crazy Jane
- B1 - Sword Of Blue Flame Over America
- B2 - Sword Of Blue Flame Over Islam
-
- A1 is incredible! Imagine Kraftwerk with tribal beats and brain
- ripping bass. Sorta like detroit techno gone to the UK on holiday
- and come back with pectoral implants. Or something. Features a
- pounding energy building tribal break that will turn your dancefloor
- into a screaming pile of twisted human wreckage. A2 is sort of a
- remix of A1 with some random female vocalizings over the top - not as
- good. B2 and B2 are an interesting tribal techno take but they pale
- in comparison to A1.
-
- ED008 - High Lonesome Sound System
- A1 - Waiting for the Lights
- A2 - Waiting for the Lights (Mandalay Mix)
- B1 - Waiting for the Lights (Thai Mix)
- B2 - Waiting for Champion Sound
-
- A1 and A2 are rather standard housey techno tracks. B1 mixes it up
- into a more appealing package, with more detailed percussion. B2
- throws in the ragga guy from ED003.
-
- ED009 will be out sometime soon. They've completed the track and
- they're just waiting for some more money to come in so they can press
- it. A remix of it will be featured on issue 10 of Twitch...
