- Nope, it's Sir Walter Scott. My Bartlett's (14th) makes it unclear
- whether it's from "Lochinvar" or "Marmion."
-
- "Oh, what a tangled web we weave,
- When first we practice to deceive!"
-
- Misattributed quotes could be a thread all its own. It is interesting
- who gets credited with what sayings. For instance, Scott also wrote
-
- "Breathes there the man, with soul so dead,
- Who never to himself hath said,
- This is my own, my native land!"
-
- in "Lay of the Last Minstrel;" because Scott is not in particular
- favor (you can tell by whether you were ever forced to read him in
- high school), most people would not guess or remember this.

- Neither Stanford nor the DOE would be caught dead with these opinions.
- Nor do they consult me when formulating theirs.
