- Zeleny, once again, demonstrates that the Greek discovery of the mind
- need not be permanent. It is quite possible to lose one's mind and default, as
- Ayn Rand noted, "[to] a miasma of floating abstractions unrelated to
- concretes....Reason [to those who won't reason] is a means of defeating their
- victims, a menial servant charged with the task of rationalizing the
- metaphysical validity and power of their whims [ontological commitments,
- assumptions]....When men do not choose to reach the conceptual level, their
- consciousness has no recourse [like a computer default] but to its automatic,
- perceptual, semi-animal functions." Zeleny symbolizes his semi-animal functions
- and calls it philosophy.

- you had known in your childhood: that spirit of eagerness, adventure and cer-
- tainty which comes from dealing with a rational universe."
