- I seem to spend a goodly proportion of my waking life whining
- about teenagers.
-
- They're just so fucking self centred. I hate that. It was ok
- when I was a young 'un, but now that I'm officially 'over the
- hill' [at 34.5] I feel that I am entitled to some good old
- fashioned anti-teenager bigotry, that I am accused of whether I
- participate in the game or not.
-
- Take today for example. My SO and I arrange to go for a drive
- out into the countryside, to have a gander at some marvel of
- modern engineering [a dam. Exciting, eh?], and Miss Lonely Heart
- demands to be let off in Tuggeranong, so that she can whine to
- her best friend about how perfectly beastly my SO and I are to
- her. Never mind that Tuggeranong [a suburb of Canberra] is
- almost exactly 180 degrees from the direction we want to go, and
- some 20 kilometers away at that, but it has to be done ASAP of
- the sky will fall on our heads.
-
- No problem, really, just drive there, drop her off, and then be
- able to talk to each other without having little miss shithead
- [18, going on three] start whining about how hard done by she is
- by all and sundry.
-
- Speak of the devil, she's back home, and with several
- thousand people after saying "I won't bring anyone home
- tonight, I promise. Sheesh. Although it looks like
- she'll be fucking off again any minute, as is her wont.
-
- But I digress.
-
- SO and I had a triffic time surveying the dam [Googong reservoir,
- part of the ACT Electricity and Water supply], watching swifts
- getting insects, and feeding them to their offspring in nests
- made out of some 10cm round holes in the concrete banks of the
- dam's spillway. It was hot too 30C [85F]. A major peeve of mine
- is hot weather. But heck, it is summer.
-
- We trek out to a friend's place [who lives an alternate existence
- on the outskirts of civilization, in a caravan, by a stream,
- complete with a menagerie of sheep, goats, chickens, ducks,
- geese, dogs, cats and a pigeon] and spend a hot afternoon
- discussing how bad the teenager is acting with our friend.
-
- Then it's off to purchase a couple of bottles of Australian
- champagne [a wine type now officially dropped from the Australian
- wine market's lexicon, in order to appease the French, and allow
- Australian entry into the lucrative European market] and some
- chilli crisps/chips, and then back home.
-
- Where Teenager + friend have already turned up, and are due to
- leave for a nights wassailing, and are late, late, late. Having
- half started to cook an evenings meal for herself and her friend,
- twinkletoes pleads with mummy "please please please will you cook
- for me, I have to get ready and I have to leave by 7.50 [it was
- 7.30]. SO dutifully finishes cooking their dinner, and then the
- two teenagers slope about until 8.30, before waltzing off to
- their appointment. Fashionably late, no doubt.
-
- Said teenager couldn't organise herself if her life depended upon
- it.
-
- Argggh..
-
- First posting to a.p. of '93, and I end up being overcome with
- the utter futility of it all.
-
- Have a very fucking nice new year.
-
