  22. But not even traditional, orthodox Christianity interprets this in a narrow, 
  23. literalistic way, despite the intolerant propaganda of some modern Protestant 
  24. splinter groups.  Take even Roman Catholicism, arguably the most exclusionary 
  25. of Christian sects.  The crowning pillar of Roman Catholic theology, Saint 
  26. Augustine, wrote:

  29. never did not exist, from the beginnings of the human race, until Christ came 
  30. into the flesh at which time the true religion, which already existed, began 
  31. to be called Christianity."

  33. You can find similar writings from the second century to the twentieth.  They 
  34. all point to a symbolic meaning not bound by particular names or structures.  
  35. Some Christian writers go so far as to say that Christianity is not actually 
  36. a particular religion at all, but a pattern of love, forgiveness, and 
  37. perfection of ourselves, each other, and the world around us.
