  37. Speaking of meanings of words, I hope this is the right place to ask
  38. the following questions (bear with me, much descriptive text before
  39. the actual questions follows):

  41. During a recent episode of Northern Exposure, Joel (who is Jewish)
  42. gets his first xmas tree after talking to Ed and Dave.  Ed kind of
  43. talks Joel into getting a tree.  Joel protests that he's Jewish,
  44. not Christian.  Dave (or Ed) says not to worry, Dave has a tree,
  45. and he's not a Christian, he's an animist.
  46.  
  47. Joel goes to the local store and asks to buy ornaments for the tree.
  48. Unsure what to get, he asks Ruth Anne (the proprietor) what she
  49. puts on her tree.  Ruth Anne says she doesn't put up a tree because
  50. she doesn't believe in cutting them down and then letting them get
  51. all brown and die.  "Besides," she says, "I'm an atheist."
  52.  
  53. Joel smiles, and replies that he is impressed because he's always
  54. thought that it "must take a lot of faith, er, conviction, 
  55. not to believe in a supreme being."
  56.  
  57. To which Ruth Anne replies, "Oh, I believe in a supreme being, all right.
  58. It's just that she doesn't take human form."

  60. Okay, now for my questions regarding definitions:

  62. I had assumed (like Joel) that an atheist did not believe in a supreme
  63. being or perhaps that an atheist did not believe in any deity.  
  64. However, after looking the word "atheist" up in three dictionaries,
  65. I get varying definitions, and it appears that "atheist" may be limited
  66. to "one who doesn't believe in the Judaeo-Christian God".
  67.  
  68. Given that as a definition, is an animist an atheist?
  69. Is a pantheist an atheist?
  70. Can one be both a theist and an atheist as long as one doesn't believe
  71. in Yahweh?
  72.  
  73. Anyway, I don't mean to start a long-winded argument, debate, etc., I'm
  74. just interested in the meanings of words.
