  26. This interpretation of the word "faggot" is one I have been familiar
  27. with for a long time.  I do think it predates Morgan, although I am
  28. not sure how accurate it is.  It is true that gay men were often
  29. bundled up and thrown onto the witches fire, if not burned as
  30. witches themselves.

  32. There are several cases on record of men replying to accusations of
  33. heresy by claiming they had wives they slept with, and children.
  34. Heresy had at several points of the inquisition become synonymous with
  35. homosexuality, and was a burning offense.

  37. Judy Grahn in Another Mother Tongue takes a close look at the meaning
  38. of faggot as a flaming stick, or more accurately a sacred flaming
  39. stick or wand, like the flowering rod of the south.  One origin of the
  40. word faggot is fagus, the latin word for a beech tree, a sacred tree
  41. of the fairies, sorcerors and magical kings.  It was the beech tree
  42. that Joan of Arc visited to hear her voice messages.  During her trial
  43. she was accused of dancing around this tree with the fairy people.

  45. The term faggot may have originated with the association of a sacred
  46. and magical burning stick, or a wand, symbols of male sexual energy
  47. and power.  This interpretation is more empowering than the
  48. association made during the burning times.  But some of us remember
  49. our fallen brothers, and how the boys burned too.  It is hard for me
  50. to use the word faggot without remembering both.
