- I think that you are probably exaggerating the extent to which the
- Chabadniks dwell on the messiah issue. From 1975 to 1979 I attended
- Chabad House services in Berkeley, California (on an irregular basis,
- but still no less than a dozen times a year). I took classes there and
- studied Gemara with a Chabad rav. I cannot recall a single serious
- conversation about the messiah. Now, I'm not saying that people
- wouldn't say things like "such and such will be settled when the
- Messiah comes." But usually the speaker had a twinkle in his eye. I'm
- sure that there were serious conversations about the issues of messiah
- during this period, but the point I'm making is that it was (and is)
- far enough from a central issue even for Lubavitch that someone can
- attend services, classes and discussions without touching on such
- matters.
-
- In my original article, I mentioned that during stressful periods
- various Jews and perhaps entire communities do become more concerned
- with the messianic issues. It is likely that this is happening today in
- Lubavitch because of the advanced age and declining health of the
- Rebbe. As you probably know, there is no one who is regarded as a
- particularly suitable replacement for the Rebbe. Therefore, among his
- devout followers, there is undoubtedly an elevated sense that something
- *must* be about to happen.
-
- Disclaimer: Although I am deeply grateful for the learning I
- received at Chabad, I did not at that time and still do not
- identify myself as one of their partisans.
