- Magic stores, have gotten the reputation of being akin to the kitchen at a
- party. By that I mean that whenever you throw a party most folks congregate
- in the cramped little kitchen because they feel comfortable in there. It is
- easier to chat and build friendships in the kitchen. In the same manner,
- many magic shops are a place to gather and show off the latest finger
- flicking or review the latest adverts in the Linking Ring. Unfortunately,
- like kitchens, most magic shops are small cramped places without a lot of
- room to congregate.
-
- I mention this because I have read about so-n-so's magic shop and how the
- owners were rude or ignored you.. They refused to sit and visit. By gosh,
- they virtually ran their shop like a business!
-
- Folks, keep in mind that when you are the proprietor of a magic shop... You
- love magic, but, you also still need to place food on the table! I have seen
- shops with the regulars that come in and BS the day away and spend not 1
- dime. and I have seen shops where the owner will demo a couple effects at
- your request and then disappear behind the curtain after your purchase to
- work on some mail order stuff (leaving you thinking he went to bed back
- there).
-
- When you go into a magic shop have an idea of what you want. If you are
- unsure tell the owner what your experience level is and in what circumstances
- you wish to perform the effect. and what results you want to happen. If you
- have 20 packet tricks at home gathering dust, dont buy another one!
- Routining is what seperates a magician from a trickster. So tell the shopkeep
- what you are going to do before and after the new effect and see if they have
- any ideas on continuity for the transition. Just don't expect this guy to
- spend all day showing you everything on the wall and in the case.. He doesn't
- need the practice and on average, folks that make him demo every little thing
- spend about $5.
