- His name is Rene' Lavand from somewhere in South America (Argentina,
- I think). He performed and lectured at Steven's Desert Magic Seminar
- last year and was superb. He is also scheduled to perform at a couple
- of conventions in 1993 but I don't remember which ones (either SAM, IBM,
- Hank Lee's or NYCAN).
-
- He has only one hand (I don't remember when or how he lost the other).
- The routine (red and black cards) is explained in his book and video
- called, "Slow Motion Magic". The routine that I saw him perform last
- year was very charming and funny. He would mix up the cards and then
- one-by-one, show how the cards re-arranged themselves into red and white.
- He would explain that he couldn't do it any slower but he would try
- and then in a slower pace/rythmn, he would still mystify the audience.
-
- He also performed a shell game effect using a tea cup and 3 peas.
- The story he used for patter was the most touching and beautiful story
- that I've heard done with magic. Briefly, he explained how he was one
- of three good friends (the sun, the moon and he). And they always did
- things together, and no matter how they separated, they always remained
- together. The story was so touching, he had many of the women in the
- audience in tears (most of the men were magicians and were too busy
- trying to remember the routine to get emotional about it).
-
- I would strongly recommend seeing him live. When I saw him, Tina Lennart
- did the translations. She did a wonderful job and you could see the
- love and respect she had for Lavand. When he performed the shell routine,
- she was not able to translate because of the tears.
