- [A Sidenote: A server's right to live or not does not only depends on
- if it has users or not. I see no problem in having several
- servers under a domain (in the widest sense) as long as only
- ONE server are connecting to the outside world. What is going
- on inside a domain is entierly the domain's business.
- This is also why the EBIC works.]

- Well.. what is "regular" ? How does you mesure this ? How many users/hours
- should one use ? 3 hours per user per day ? 12 hours ? 1 hour ?
- This is like trying to tell who was Santa Claus last year !
-
-
- A better measurement is finding out how much a server has served in TIME.
-
- This measurement should be done over a 30 day period. If it show up that
- a server has server less than 30 days (1 day is 24 hours, not 12 hours),
- one should question if the server has a right to live.
- Of course one has to eliminate any "StupidoBoto".
-
- Example:
-
- Log started: Tue Dec 1 03:41:41 1992
- Log ended: Mon Dec 21 09:45:58 1992
-
- TOTAL INFORMATION
- ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
- Total served time: 66 ds + 19:55:28
- Number of sessions: 1949
- Number of different domains: 15
- Number of different users: 195
- Number of different machines: 114
-
- The figures are taken from alf.uib.no. With such figures you can calculate
- whatever you want.
-
- Requirements to get such figures and a lot of other stuff regarding
- stats from the server:
- - perl (4.019 an above.)
- - Enable FNAME_USERLOG in the config.h (aprox line 254 in 272g.)
- - ircstat (found on nic.funet.fi:pub/unix/ircstat.tar.Z.)
- - Fiddle with the IDF file, but this is not nececary (SP??.)
-
- What more than just total info will this statscript give ?:
- - Sorted (by time) domains based on the domains in the IDF. (A IDF is not
- required, but it's nice to have, and easy configurable.)
- - The domians present expanded to whatever. Full text for instance.
- - Sorted (by time) users. With this it may be possible to use Darren's
- "requirement" to see if a server has a right to live.
- (Again taken from the log. User id's protected.):
-
- Num Username Logins Connection time
- ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
- 1 user1@bih.no 227 9 ds + 20:11:48
- 2 user2@unit.no 6 5 ds + 21:54:25
- 3 user3@felles.uib.no 204 5 ds + 04:36:29
- 4 user4@bih.no 6 3 ds + 23:40:43
- 5 user5@aid.no 28 2 ds + 19:15:32
- 6 user6@bih.no 69 2 ds + 19:05:41
- 7 user7@hsr.no 58 2 ds + 09:20:31
- 8 user8@aid.no 27 2 ds + 02:54:40
- 9 user9@hsr.no 25 2 ds + 01:59:15
- 10 user10@bih.no 57 2 ds + 01:44:25
- [.. rest of users delted ..]
-
- Note that such a userlog can not be "public" in some countries (like
- Norway). Check your local laws on personal information and computers.
-
- Is those users considder to be regulars ? I would say yes.
-
- \Ruben.
- (Say NO ! to 1) client open servers 2) unattended bots 3) unattended servers)
-
- PS: There will soon be released (during Xmas) a new version of ircstat,
- hopefully the new version will run a bit faster.
