- I received a garbled header (no message text) with subject line
- OFF-LINE READER?? after a previous post where I indicated that I
- was installing new software that included an "Off-line reader."
-
- Seems like some explanation is in order. I access the internet
- through two separate providers. I have a SPARCstation connected
- to a network at work where I sometimes read mail and posts. I have
- a fairly sensitive position, so I don't like to do too much stuff
- unrelated to work from work. To fix this I also have an account
- with a provider in Greenbelt, MD, which I access from a DOS machine
- at home.
-
- The provider's basic charge gives me one prime-time hour per day and
- unlimited nonprime-time access. Most of my messaging and news reading
- is done during prime time-- so..........it can get quite expensive.
- Consequently, I'm installing software which will download all the
- news groups I subscribe to and all my mail, and then disconnect me
- from the provider's computer. End of charges. Then at my leisure
- I can read and reply to news and mail. When I get done the software
- uploads new posts and replies in a format the service provider can
- handle (using uunencode, for something like that).
-
- The software I'm using is Q-Modem Pro (I have no financial interest).
- It cost $89 at Software, Etc. I'm sure it can be found anywhere.
-
- I hope this explains what I meant by "Off-Line Reader." If anyone is
- interested, I'll let you know whether it works as advertized.
