  15. FreeLore is useful information that is stored in
  16. electronic or magnetic media and has a copyright
  17. similar to that of GNU software.  FreeLore is not
  18. a proprietary name or product, but an idea.  In
  19. essence, it is the generalization of GNU software
  20. to any kind of useful information.

  22. You are hereby cordially invited to join the FreeLore
  23. Project as a charter member.  
  24.  
  25. The provisional purpose of the FreeLore Project is
  26. to organize volunteers to:
  27.  
  28. -- promote and encourage the production of free
  29. educational and other useful materials
  30. (``FreeLore'') in the electronic and
  31. electronically-derived print media;
  32.  
  33. -- to define standards for FreeLore;
  34.  
  35. -- to promote active discussion of issues facing
  36. the producers of FreeLore;
  37.  
  38. -- to capture and enhance (markup) public-domain data for
  39. inclusion in FreeLore;
  40.  
  41. -- to provide information to persons interested in
  42. using or writing FreeLore;
  43.  
  44. -- to promote efficient use of networks as a means of
  45. providing access to FreeLore;
  46.  
  47. -- to organize and provide support services such
  48. as archiving, markup, cataloguing,
  49. self-registration of (self-)published materials,
  50. and software maintenance;
  51.  
  52. -- to promote cataloguing standards for FreeLore;
  53.  
  54. -- to encourage electronic-media as the primary media
  55. of scholarly discussion and journal publication;
  56.  
  57. -- to create copylefted or public-domain software for
  58. creating, accessing, and viewing FreeLore;
  59.  
  60. -- to promote freedom of access to information in
  61. whatever form generally.

  63. Our first task will be to work out a real charter and
  64. an agenda.  Discussion will be mostly by email, and
  65. not necessarily conducted in alt.uu.future.
