- Throwing in my 2 cents:
-
- First, anyone who can't get a 351C to rev to more than 6,000 rpm has either:
- 1) weak valve springs - causing valve float.
-
- 2) A very mild cam.
-
- 3) Any of a host of ignition/timing problems.
-
- 4) Windsor heads :)
-
- Even the 2V heads have intake/exhaust ports that should let the engine rev
- to 7,000 (it'll probably peak at 5,000 - 5,500, though, in terms of max. H.P.)
-
- "Wimpy" castings - nominal spec. for the cylinder walls is somewhere around
- 0.1" or more - hardly "sheetmetal". My Ford references do say that max.
- overbore for race applications is 0.020". Try finding 0.020" oversized
- forged pistons, though...
-
- 302 revving - better make sure you've got the good rods (3/8" rod bolts,
- *not* 5/16ths.)
-
- 302 wimp motors? Drop by a dragstrip some day. Look at where the 5.0 L
- LX's/GT's are running. I've seen times in the mid to high 12's, with end
- of quarter mile speeds of 104+ mph. These are cars that *aren't* running
- nitrous. One guy that's out at Norwalk (Ohio) regularly runs 12.60's, and
- most of the money he's spent went into his slicks! (Spent a few pennies on
- a hot cam, '69 4V Windsor heads, and a 4.11 gear set, but I don't think it
- totaled more than $400, though. He seems to be good at finding deals...)
-
- Where do those 5.0 L HO's come from, anyway. A lot of them come from the
- Cleveland engine plant. I think the balance come from Windsor. Don't know
- about Mexico, except that the Festiva comes from there...
-
- While I'm posting, does anyone know if there's an aftermarket 351C intake
- available that can be set up for sequential port injection? I'm in the
- process of building a 351C (need a manifold for the 4V heads) and don't
- relish the prospect of buying a tunnelram and drilling injector holes in
- it, but if that's what I have to do, well, that's what I'll do...
