- Reply to: RE>Ken Duttwieller does a FORD
- -> motor! Kind of a shock to us Buick fans :^)

- >>"An engine is just an air pump. It doesn't care what name is on the
- valve cover." - Bob Glidden<<
-
- An aside ... I think Bob is a pretty classy guy. I think it's great that his
- son Rusty is now running a car with Dad! I saw Rusty weld several competitors
- to the starting line at the NHRA Mile High Nationals this year ...
- unfortunately most out powered Rusty, but a good showing none-the-less!
-
- BTW, the Buick fans remark was a joke. :^) Actually, I don't care for brand
- bashing ... every brand has its strengths and faults, its fans and detractors
- ... I certainly don't lose any sleep over someone who's favorite marque is not
- the same as mine. Be pretty damn boring if we all had identical tastes! :^)

-
- >>A one-off what? Duttweiler made a pulley, or whittled a whole blower
- >>out of aluminum? The info I got from Vortech a couple of years ago
- >>showed a curve falling off drastically at about 10psi, and 10psi ain't
- >>gonna get you 700hp!
-
- Most of the one-off stuff had to do with the intake manifold and throttle body.
- Ken used a Weiand tunnel-ram intake lower half and a fabricated upper plenum.
- Looks like a bread box with the throttle body sticking out of the passenger's
- side. Huge throttle body (75mm).
-
- An MSD-7AL-2 40,000 volt ignition box, small cap distributor and Blaster 2 coil
- were used, controlled by an Accel/DFI computer. He also used MSD 50 lb/hr
- injectors and a NOS 92 gph/70 psi electric fuel pump and dry sump oiling
- system.
-
- Ken uses light weight Chevy length valves with 2.08 intake and 1.65 exhaust and
- a modified Crane blower cam. He moved the valves relative position in the GT
- 40 head to unshroud the valves and provide better flow. He also uses an
- experimental Fel Pro Head gasket that has a "captured O ring" design to avoid
- having to O ring the block. The O ring groove is cut into the head instead.
-
- According to the article, the supercharger is providing 17 psi. Again, it
- looks like a Turbo with no exhaust housing. The caption to the picture reads:
-
- "Vortech's centrifugal supercharger is designed for improved airflow dynamics
- over other centrifugal superchargers. Only the pulley and belt drive betray
- the fact that the efficiently designed Vortech blower is a supercharger, not a
- turbocharger. The 200 mph Mustang uses a developmental prototype that replaces
- the existing Vortech's straight impeller vanes with turbolike curved vanes on
- the impeller for even greater efficiency - it could be in production by late
- this year ...."
-
- Amongst all the hype, the description is pretty accurate. Since this is a
- prototype, I'm not surprised that the existing product line does not live up to
- these specs. Pretty neat stuff!
