- Why can't I take more than three records?
-
- Okay, I run by my bookshelf and grab five books. That makes it
- either five books on my shelf I haven't read, or five I want to read
- again. Or
-
- 1. Ulysses. Maybe this way I'll finish it.
-
- 2. Finnegans Wake. It was sitting next to Ulysses. Let me get this
- straight . . . I'm stuck forever on a deserted island, and I need
- something to occupy me for the duration? This one should do the trick.
-
- 3. Moby Dick. I've only read it twice.
-
- 4. Something by Peter De Vries. Let's see--The Vale of Laughter. (It
- starts out "Call me, Ishmael, call me anytime you like." Goes well with
- Melville, don't you think?) Or the one where he does all the parody--I
- think it was Into Your Tent I'll Creep. It's got a nice takeoff on
- Ulysses. No, let's make it The Blood of the Lamb. That's depressing
- enough of a comic farce.
-
- 5. Potluck Pogo. Kelly really picked me up with this one the time my
- girlfriend ran off with another woman. The table of contents is a poem.
-
- 3 records?
-
- 1. Abbey Road.
- 2. Till Eulenspiegl's Merry Pranks (see De Vries' Vale of Laughter).
- 3. I'll take a forty-five of The Chi Lites' "Have You Seen Her"
-
